We’re very excited to announce a new addition to our Beehive: artist Jennifer Strutt, who will be teaching our newly opened Primary Art Class.
Jennifer calls herself a colourist. She lives and breaths colour and has been a professional Visual Artist for over 20 years. As one half of Newcastle’s successful creative collaborations, The Strutt Sisters with her twin Sister Catherine, Jennifer is well versed in the language of colour, pattern, composition and mixed media assemblage. She is a designer of her own range of jewellery and is a workshop teacher to many beginner artists and groups of children within the Newcastle art community.
Starting off as a painter in most mediums she moved onto the art of printmaking followed by sculpture. She has three tertiary degrees in Visual Art from Hunter Street TAFE Art School and University of Newcastle: Ass Dip in Fine Art, Bachelor of Arts Visual Art and a Post Grad in Printmaking/Painting but it has been the decades after and the making of hundreds of artworks where she gained the most valuable practical art making lessons. Her humorous and quirky mixed media assemblages are created using cut and shaped aluminium, paper, paint, fabric and resin and are instantly recognisable as a Strutt Sister artwork.
Jennifer has been associated with many Australian galleries exhibiting in over sixteen solo exhibitions and countless group shows since 1994. In 2003 her work was a finalist in the prestigious Sulman Art Award. She has been both Second and First Prize winner of the Muswellbrook Art Prize in 2007 and 2011 respectively. Her work resides in many private and public collections both nationally and internationally including Artbank, Muswellbrook and Tamworth Regional Art Galleries. Her art career has led her to be invited to be a guest onto SBSTV’s Insight, ABCTV’s Art Nation and science show Catalyst. Her jewellery has been used in ABCTV’s Please Like Me and Channel 10’s Party Tricks.
Our Bee Artistic program gives children the opportunity to explore a wide range of art forms, including clay and wire sculpture, paint and texture, drawing and charcoal, layering and collage and more. Each week, children learn about the inspiring artist for their project and create an artwork in that style.
