Have you ever wondered what music classes for babies can possibly teach your child? Hint: it’s more than just about music. From a very early age babies have the capacity to learn interpersonal skills, and music classes are a great for kids to improve those skills since they require peer interaction, communication and teamwork. Music classes also help kids to develop motor and cognitive skills through listening, looking, moving and playing, which engage different parts of the brain at once.

Studies have shown when music lessons start soon after birth, babies have the chance to bond with parents and peers through simple movement activities such as musical games, swaying or dancing while holding the baby, or singing or playing an instrument for the child. Another reason why baby music classes have become increasingly popular is because encourages learning in a playful way.

Once kids start understanding their surroundings a little more, ages 1 to 3 years old, they’ll learn through music that how their individual participation matters in a group setting. For instance, as children must collaborate to create a crescendo or an accelerando. If a child is playing their instrument too loudly or speeding up too quickly, they will need to adjust. Group lessons are also an amazing way to teach children to understand constructive criticism and feedback and help them understand that nobody, including themselves or their peers, is perfect, and that everyone has room for improvement. Music classes also a great way of encouraging kids to speak and/or perform in public, which will be extremely beneficial to them as they grow up.

Immersing your baby in music from birth causes your baby’s brain to connect and grow neural pathways that will form the foundations of their creative talent in music, art, language and maths for their future. The optimum time for this to occur is while the brain is still rapidly growing – between birth and 3 years of age. During this time, the neural structures and mechanisms associated with processing and understanding music are in the prime stages of development, making it of utmost importance to expose children in this age range to music.

At Hive Creative Studios, we believe that through music, language and art kids learn to express themselves and gain confidence to explore their full potential as human beings.
