Musical Theatre

In Musical Theatre, the three great performing arts of singing, dancing and acting combine to create one vibrant performance experience.  

In each class, students learn to sing and refine their singing technique; learn dance movements and choreographed sequences to musical theatre songs ; act out scenes, explore characters and learn their part in performances. Classes are action-packed, energetic and exciting!

Kindy Performing Arts

At this age Performing Arts is an introduction into the three main elements that make up musical theatre. Dancing, acting, singing. Students will learn the fundamental skills of each and how to apply them all at once in a fun and energetic class.

YEARS (1-3)

Lower Primary
Musical Theatre

A time to build confidence and explore working as an ensemble with a combination of creative play in groups and as individuals. Development in skills will also allow for confidence to build as we learn fundamental dance, acting and vocal techniques.

Upper Primary

Creativity within the lines of a script or score is all about character building. While learning technique and application, we explore the dynamics available to make character choices and at the same time the importance of working alongside a director both as an individual and as an ensemble.

High School

As we progress in our Musical Theatre development, a wider range of musicals become available to us. Students are challenged with more advanced materials and solo repertoire building as we the exploration of story telling and emotional connection to the material.

Musical Theatre Extension Classes

Our audition only Musical Theatre classes are open to students enrolled in a performing arts class at Hive. Students study acting, dance and solo voice technique for musical theatre in masterclass workshop style classes. Students either select or are assigned a musical theatre song to work on for the term. We learn by doing and by watching other students receive feedback and applying it to our own work.

Key focuses of the class:
• Performing the story of a song (emotional expression and connection to the lyrics/story)
• Finding your true voice
• Vocal sustainability (keeping your voice healthy)
• Voice technique including diction, projection, tone and placement in musical theatre
• Text analysis and interpretation for acting 
• Dance (Ballet, contemporary and musical theatre) Technique

2022 Projects


Term 1 & 2:
Kindy students will be introduced to some basic performing skills, including dance, drama and voice. In addition, they will explore a new Musical Theatre production every two weeks, such as Mary Poppins, Oliver, Shrek and Suessical,to expand their knowledge of the Musical Theatre world.  Terms 1 & 2 will allow students to:
• Learn classic jazz steps
• Work on Character development
• Understand the art of storytelling
• Explore ways of how to express emotion (i.e facial expressions, mime, voice control)
• Vocal skills

Term 3 & 4:
The last two terms, students will expand their preperation for the stage. With a more in-depth look at how the theatre works, kids will learn theatre terms, how to work with scripts, line memorising and audition preperation. Students will prepare a small (In-class) performance of a Mini Musical. Terms 3 & 4 will allow students to:
• Understand how the theatre works and production roles
• Work in a team and also solo
• Expand simple steps into basic choreography
• Further explore vocal techniques to projection, diction and range.

Years 1-9

Term 1: Musical Theatre Throughout The Ages

Featuring songs from different eras of Musical Theatre. Each class will focus on one decade of musical theatre and prepare a song from that decade.

PERFORMANCE: Saturday April 9th, Hunter Theatre (HSPA)

Term 2 & 3: Grease Jr Showcase

Our main performance for 2022 will feature each class performing songs from Grease Jr! Students will learn 50s style Rock & Roll dancing, and singing for rock musicals.

PERFORMANCE: Saturday August 27th, Hunter Theatre

Term 4: Hive Holiday Spectacular

This marks our 2nd annual Holiday Concert. Students will perform a range of Holiday themed songs.

Musical Theatre Fees 2022

Hive offers both a Term Upfront enrolment option & a Monthly Installmentenrolment option for students.

Full term enrolment: 

1 Hour Standard Musical Theatre Classes:
$21/Class ($210/10 week term) applies to all classes from Kindy to year 6.

1.5 Hour Musical Theatre Classes:
$28/Class ($210/10 week term) applies to year 7-12 only.

Multi-Class Discount (Applicable for both Drama & Musical Theatre):
$38/2 classes/week ($380/10 week term) applies to 1 hour classes only

Extension Classes:
$25/Class ($250/10 week term)

Payment Options:

  • Opt 1: A monthly playment plan (3 equal installments)
  • Opt 2: Upfront fee payment

Enrolment Information:

• Enrolments Auto-renew every term. For upfront term payments, your enrolment will auto-enrol in week 8 of the term for the following term and your card will be debited in week 9 for the next terms fees.  Prior to this occuring you will receive 2 text and email alerts.
• No cancellations during the term. All cancellations must be submitted in week 9 for the following term. You will be notified via email, text message and the School Stream App as this date approaches

• 10% off holiday workshops

Performing Arts Uniform: New students must purchase a Hive Perfroming Arts shirt to wear class each week. These can be purchased via the HIVE SHOP.

Covid 19 Plan

Should the Hive be required to close at any time due to COVID 19 in our community, the following plan will be implemented:

All classes will continue using our live online learning format. Students will have access to unlimited online classes in both drama and musical theatre for the same weekly price. 

Should you wish to cancel your classes until we reopen – simply follow the usual cancellation process. You can continue online until the end of the month.
